Introduction

DSS is a company that has provided software modules for the VA's VistA system. It has developed an open-source version of VistA called vxVistA.

vxVistA, like the VA's VistA system, uses the proprietary Cache version of the MUMPS database, which must be licensed (for a fee) separately. The co-ordinated vxVistA stack is therefore not available as a completely open source product.

  • Pros: Support by a large VA contractor.
  • Cons: Very slow development time. Not freely available. Requires the proprietary Cache database (not free). Has been vaporware for the most part.
