Psychiatry specific DSM Axis II-V diagnosis, precaution ordering
Ignacio Valdes Date: Thu, 4 Sep 2008 17:01:53 -0500
Hi, I have the templating going. I see where I can do something similar to DSM Axis I diagnosis but I do not see a place for Axis II through V other than in free text in a clinical note. Is there a way to handle this in diagnosis? How have others handled this?
Also, most inpatient psychiatric hospitals have various 'precautions' that can be ordered such as Suicide, Seizure, Detox, etc. Has anyone defined these in ordering?

Hi again, How does one get DSM Axis I diagnoses into the Diagnosis dialog box that appears when signing? There is a section for mental health diagnoses but they look like ICD 9's and if they are DSM then they are not particularly complete. Has anyone been able to achieve entering DSM Axis I diagnoses in the Diagnosis dialog box? Thanks!

I think that diagnosis box is just ICD9.
Are you saying that DSM Axis codes are not ICD9? That seems strange. Are these submitted to insurance companies? They don't require ICD9?

They are two different sets for basically the same thing with important differences. DSM is more US Mental Health oriented. I am fairly ignorant of how the billing is done. -- IV

Ignacio,
Look at IHS's Mental Health packages. They do have a GUI (functional but one that sucks) as well as the roll and scroll interface. The package is specifically for Mental Health providers and includes concepts such as DSM axes, diagnoses using DSM-IV, and very strong attention to Mental Health issues rather than plain medical issues. CPRS is not designed for mental health.
The website is:
And to download the code to run it:
There are tons of stuff there; the namespace is AMH, and that's what you are looking for. The last major version I found is here:
and it has an installation, user and technical manuals (as usual, there are a lot of patches.)
Now a disclaimer: The package will not run unmodified in a Vista system.

FYI, the system DOES do DSM Axis I diagnosis but you have to do a 'Other Diagnosis' search as the ones that are pre-defined are basic and ICD oriented. -- IV
